In a recent post, members of the Mental Health First Aid community generously shared their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org\/2017\/12\/holiday-self-care-tips-mental-health-first-aid-community\/\">holiday self-care tips<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But there is a whole group of people for whom the stress of the holidays has little to do with being busy and everything to do with how they live their lives every day \u2013 lonely and socially isolated. Despite all the technology that promises to connect us, we are living in the midst of what former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy calls a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/cover-story\/2017\/09\/work-and-the-loneliness-epidemic\">loneliness epidemic<\/a>. And being lonely is bad for our health. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/health-science\/loneliness-grows-from-individual-ache-to-public-health-hazard\/2016\/01\/31\/cf246c56-ba20-11e5-99f3-184bc379b12d_story.html\">Research<\/a>\u00a0reveals lack of social connectedness is as much a risk for premature mortality as obesity and smoking.<\/p>\n<p>Feelings of being isolated and alone cut across all age groups. Older adults may experience the loss of loved ones. Teens who spend more time on their phones and less time interacting in person report feeling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org\/external\/2017\/10\/social-media-mental-health\/\">lonely and depressed<\/a>. And the holidays, with their songs that tell us to \u201cbe of good cheer,\u201d can be especially difficult for those whose social ties are frayed.<\/p>\n<p>The antidote for loneliness isn\u2019t \u201ctit-for-tat joy,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/5041067\/patton-oswalt-wife-death-holidays\/\">writes<\/a> comedian and actor Patton Oswalt. \u201cIt\u2019s other people being alive and present which spawns true joy.\u201d In fact, people value<a href=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/0265407517724600\"> human interaction<\/a> more than receiving material items.<\/p>\n<p>If loneliness is killing us, Dr. Murthy believes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalcouncil.org\/lindas-corner-office\/2017\/05\/loneliness-killing-us-love-compassion-can-heal-conversation-former-surgeon-general-vivek-murthy\/\">authentic relationships<\/a> can help heal us, and that\u2019s what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org\/\">Mental Health First Aid<\/a> is all about. This evidence-based program teaches people how to reach across the divide, connecting with people who may be experiencing a mental health or substance use problem.
