Her parents called her an \u201cold soul\u201d and a \u201cfree spirit.\u201d She spent her free time raising money for childhood cancer. She loved flowers of all kinds\u2014fitting for a girl whose middle name was \u201cRose.\u201d On June 14, after months of being bullied in text messages, Instagram posts, and Snapchats, Mallory took her own life (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/morning-mix\/wp\/2017\/08\/02\/after-months-of-bullying-a-12-year-old-new-jersey-girl-killed-herself-her-parents-blame-the-school\/?utm_term=.374cbc9a0cb4\">After months of bullying, a 12-year-old New Jersey girl killed herself. Her parents blame the school.<\/a> <em>The Washington Post<\/em>, Aug. 2, 2017).<\/p>\n<p>Repeated pleas for help were ignored by both the school Mallory attended and the parents of the girls who tormented her, according to Mallory\u2019s parents, Seth and Dianne Grossman. Just hours before her daughter\u2019s death, Dianne spoke to one of those parents, who dismissed the bullying by calling it a \u201cbig joke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, Mallory is not alone. More than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2017\/02\/170221102036.htm\">one-third<\/a> of middle and high school students report being cyberbullied in their lifetime, and nearly three-quarter report bullying of any kind. Suicide rates among adolescent girls are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2016\/04\/22\/474888854\/suicide-rates-climb-in-u-s-especially-among-adolescent-girls\">increasing<\/a>, and bullying is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/violenceprevention\/pdf\/bullying-suicide-translation-final-a.pdf\">a significant risk factor<\/a> for suicidal thoughts and ideation.<\/p>\n<p>Like many children who experience cyberbullying, Mallory was also bullied in person. But cyberbullying is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stopbullying.gov\/cyberbullying\/what-is-it\/index.html\">harder to escape<\/a>. It can happen anytime, day or night, and can reach kids when they are alone. Messages can spread widely and be difficult to control. Mallory exhibited many of the signs of someone being bullied, including physical health problems, academic troubles, and fear of going to school. When Mallory\u2019s grades began to plummet, her teachers were focused solely on her academics\u2014not her emotional well-being.<\/p>\n<p>Mental Health First Aid teaches people of all ages \u2013 from parents and teachers to young people themselves \u2013 to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org\/cs\/bethedifference\/\">#BeTheDifference<\/a> in the lives of someone like Mallory. First Aiders are trained to recognize and respond to signs of distress and help people find appropriate assistance.<\/p>\n<p>As we head toward the start of the new school year, it\u2019s important to remember that for kids who have been targeted by bullying and harassment, back-to-school can be a nightmare. With the skills learned in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org\/cs\/take-a-course\/course-types\/youth\/\">Youth Mental Health First Aid<\/a>, teachers can pay attention to their students\u2019 behaviors and create spaces for them to reveal whether they are concerned about bullying or other social issues at school.<\/p>\n<p>Most important, Mental Health First Aid raises awareness that emotional health and well-being are just as important as physical health. Mental health problems are nothing to be ashamed of and can be prevented and treated.<\/p>\n<p>Even one life lost is one too many, so it\u2019s time for all Americans to become trained in this potentially lifesaving program.
