You know how that irritation can send you spiraling? We all experience mood swings and everyday ups and downs, but that\u2019s not the same as a mood disorder.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhfa.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Mental Health First Aid<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> (MHFA) curriculum<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, mood disorders are characterized by the elevation or lowering of a person\u2019s mood. Bipolar disorder is a common mood disorder with distinct variations. The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance identify <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbsalliance.org\/education\/bipolar-disorder\/#types\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">five types<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> \u2013 bipolar I, bipolar II, cyclothymic disorder, bipolar not otherwise specified (NOS) and rapid cycling. Bipolar I, for example, is marked by extreme mood swings and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/manic-episode-5214527\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">manic episodes<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> that last at least a week, usually followed by a depressive episode lasting at least two weeks. These symptoms are often characterized by changes in sleep, energy level and the ability to think clearly.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bipolar disorder is more prevalent than you may think. According to Mental Health First Aid, about <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2.8% <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of adults in the U.S. experienced bipolar disorder in the past year, and it may account for <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">25% of all completed suicides.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Only a medical or mental health professional can diagnose bipolar disorder. As a Mental Health First Aider, you do not diagnose or treat, however you can still use the MHFA Action Plan (ALGEE) to #BeTheDifference to someone who seems to be struggling.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Assess for risk of suicide or harm.<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If someone appears to be exhibiting signs of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/mania\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">mania<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/depression\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20356007#:~:text=Depression%20is%20a%20mood%20disorder%20that%20causes%20a,to%20a%20variety%20of%20emotional%20and%20physical%20problems.\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">depression<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, approach them about your concerns. Signs of crisis include suicidal thoughts and behaviors, nonsuicidal self-injury and aggression.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If the person says they are considering suicide, or you think they may be, it is a crisis and you should call 911.
