I was so impressed with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">what<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0I\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">learned,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0I\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">attended another training<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the following January \u2013 I\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">wanted to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">be sure I absorbed everything.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On the day of the second training,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I decided that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that I would become a certified\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Instructor and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">spend 50% of my time offering\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">MHFA<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">trainings<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">outside of work<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A few years later,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I earned my\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Instructor certification.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I\u2019m<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">mployee<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">benefits broker,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">one of my main functions is to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">encourage<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the physical and mental wellbeing of our clients<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and their employees<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Once I\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">had my Instructor certification<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, I approached my employer<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: I wanted to create a mental health department and offer our clients\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">MHFA\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">training.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With my employer\u2019s approval,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I began to offer the trainings<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0our clients\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0human resources\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(HR)\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">directors<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0emphasizing\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the benefits of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the training. When\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">they\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">acquire\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">skills<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to identify\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">whether\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">an employee is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0experiencing a mental health challenge,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0they can<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0appropriately address\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the situation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and direct the person to the necessary care.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">En<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0company w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ill<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0benefit<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">from their staff\u2019s mental wellbeing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and not incur<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ring<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">additional\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">costs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In August 2015, a month into my certification,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I presented my\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">first<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0public<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0training<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The participants were\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">employees\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">from a single\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">company,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">plus five\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">human resources (HR)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">directors from prestigious\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Puerto Rican\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">companies.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As a result of the training, each of t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">HR\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">directors<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0hired me to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">bring<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Mental Health First Aid\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">their respective companies<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Since then, t<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hrough\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">more than 200 trainings<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I\u2019ve\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">taught<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">more than 3,600 First Aiders<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">!<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When you certify 3,600 people, you cannot\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">avoid<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the reality\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that we teach: M<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ental health\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">challenges\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are common.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In addition to your own experiences, you\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">learn of experiences shared by<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the participants themselves<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">During m<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">y training<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, I have had people\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">recognize behaviors in themselves that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">look like\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">mental health challenges<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0such as obsessive-compulsive disorder.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I\u2019ve<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0had p<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eople\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">seek help\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for depression,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">after identifying signs and symptoms of it in themselves, thanks<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to the content of the training.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What I enjoyed the most about these<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0experiences is that people\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">who come<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">learn<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to help others have been able to discover for themselves that they need\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">some kind of help<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and we have been able to help them.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But truly, m<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">y greatest inspiration is seeing the faces of the participants with a smile as they really understand the subject of mental\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">health.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I enjoy seeing\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">them leave my training happy and with a backpack full of tools to help their family,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">friends<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and co-workers.
