\"\"Mental health has always been a focus in my life, starting with my own struggles as an adolescent. As such, I was honored when my school district asked me, as a special education teacher and the\u00a0<\/span>district wellness coordinator<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0to become a certified Youth Mental Health First Aid\u00a0<\/span>(YMHFA)\u00a0<\/span>Instructor. I had always implemented tools I had\u00a0<\/span>gained\u00a0<\/span>from personal experience in cultivating a classroom atmosphere emphasizing mental health,\u00a0<\/span>and I knew that<\/span>\u00a0becoming a YMHFA\u00a0<\/span>Instructor\u00a0<\/span>would put me in a position to empower others to do the same.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On\u00a0<\/span>Thursday, March 12<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a02020, I\u00a0<\/span>stood up<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>at\u00a0<\/span>the front of my school library leading\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>first of three scheduled Youth Mental Health First Aid training<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>for\u00a0<\/span>teachers<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>administrators<\/span>\u00a0and support staff in the district.\u00a0<\/span>I left the building feeling accomplished and eager\u00a0<\/span>for the<\/span>\u00a0next two training sessions.\u00a0<\/span>But just three days later<\/span>, we received news that schools would be closed \u201cfor the next two weeks<\/span>\u201d —\u00a0<\/span>which turned into the rest of the<\/span>\u00a0school<\/span>\u00a0year<\/span>. I recognized the irony:\u00a0<\/span>En\u00a0<\/span>trainings w<\/span>ere\u00a0<\/span>canceled\u00a0<\/span>at a time when they were needed the most.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Everyone in the country was forced to <\/span>quickly\u00a0<\/span>adapt to living in a pandemic. For me, that\u00a0<\/span>meant working\u00a0<\/span>from home, with my husband doing the same, while we cared for\u00a0<\/span>our\u00a0<\/span>then<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>8-month-old son<\/span>. My mental health was\u00a0<\/span>declining<\/span>\u00a0and I recognized my students had\u00a0<\/span>similar<\/span>\u00a0challenges.\u00a0<\/span>When\u00a0<\/span>virtual MHFA became available<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>I quickly\u00a0<\/span>train<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and earn<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>certification<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I led\u00a0<\/span>seven YMHFA sessions prior to schools reopening in September 2020<\/span>, certifying\u00a0<\/span>almost 100 members of my district community in that time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

En<\/span>\u00a0return to school found\u00a0<\/span>teachers<\/span>\u00a0trying to<\/span>\u00a0balance the precarious mental health of students<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>while<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>clos<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0academic gaps resulting from the spring closure. One\u00a0<\/span>of my co-teachers participated in the YMHFA course.\u00a0<\/span>I am present in his classroom to support the needs of some of our diverse learners. On one\u00a0<\/span>particular day<\/span>, students were working in pairs while my co-teacher and I circulated and assisted.\u00a0<\/span>A<\/span>\u00a0female student in the class asked<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>my co-teacher\u00a0<\/span>for, and received<\/span>, permission to go to the restroom.<\/span>\u00a0Moments later,\u00a0<\/span>my co-teacher\u00a0<\/span>came to me with a<\/span>\u00a0note that indicated he noticed<\/span>\u00a0signs of a panic attack.<\/span>\u00a0I left the classroom and found\u00a0<\/span>the student in the\u00a0<\/span>restroom<\/span>, clearly distressed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the end of the period, a<\/span>fter\u00a0<\/span>deescalating the situation<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>the student and\u00a0<\/span>I\u00a0<\/span>returned to class together\u00a0<\/span>so\u00a0<\/span>she could gather her belongings.\u00a0<\/span>She shared how thankful she was that I was able to go talk to her, which I\u00a0<\/span>wouldn\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0have\u00a0<\/span>known<\/span>\u00a0to do without the actions of my co-teacher.<\/span>\u00a0He and I caught up after students left<\/span>,<\/span> and it was clear\u00a0<\/span>that he was proud of his ability to support the mental health needs of this student<\/span>. He\u00a0<\/span>looked at me and said, \u201c<\/span>We M<\/span>ental\u00a0<\/span>H<\/span>ealth\u00a0<\/span>F<\/span>irst\u00a0<\/span>A<\/span>ided the heck out of that situation!\u201d As the year\u00a0<\/span>h<\/span>as progressed, this student\u00a0<\/span>has\u00a0<\/span>allow<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0positive relationships to blossom with\u00a0<\/span>both of us<\/span>\u00a0and has\u00a0<\/span>expressed that she feels comfortable around us because she trusts that we care about her.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I was so proud to see YMHFA training in action! My co-teacher had immediately assessed the situation and recognized signs of distress.
