I never thought I would use any of the information or remember it, but I did shortly after the training. My friend had been struggling with depression. He called me and told me he was in a bad way and was sitting at home with a gun thinking of killing himself. I told him I was coming over.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When I got there and I listened to him, I could hear the\u00a0Instructor\u2019s\u00a0voice in my head. Everything I learned started to come out of my mouth with no effort. I felt confident. I was able to get my friend to his therapist. I realized much later that I saved his life that day because I stayed at the training.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As a Youth and Adult Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Instructor, and the King County<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Wash.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">MHFA\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Coordinator and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">p<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rogram\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">m<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">anager at Valley Cities Behavioral Healthcare, I know firsthand how empowering MHFA training can be to communities.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But this story\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">from a First Aider in King County\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">remind<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0me\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0impact\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we\u2019re<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0having on people\u2019s lives\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and the true\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">value<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of MHFA<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The King County Mental Illness Drug Dependency (MIDD)\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">initiative\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and Valley Cities Behavioral Healthcare began their MHFA partnership in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and over the last two years,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we have<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0hosted more than 270 classes and trained more than 4,280 community members as Mental Health First Aiders.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">goal of the King County MHFA Pro<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">gram<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">enable\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">community members to have conversation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0about mental health and substance use challenges<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">empower\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">them\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">reach out and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">say, \u201cI notice<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2026<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">or\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI\u2019m\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">oncern<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2026<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d and to ask<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">re you thinking of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">suicide<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">?\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2020 was a powerful year for the K<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0County MHFA program.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0King County COVID-19 response group\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">positioned<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the MHFA pro<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">gram<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to mitigate the mental health challenges brought by the pandemic.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That included<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">more than\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">$50,000 to increase capacity and provide additional MHFA training.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ith<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the additional funding and the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0opportunity to pilot the virtual MHFA\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">curriculum<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">King County\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">set out to provide\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">MHFA<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0training with the focus\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">reaching\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">people in Black, Indigenous and people of color (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">BIP<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">O<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">C<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0communities.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The program increased participation in those communities by 75%.<\/span><span data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">King\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">C<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ounty<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0MHFA pro<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">gram<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">reevaluated\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">its<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">partnerships<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and focused on those\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that shared\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">its<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">vison<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> for all<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0regardless of geographic location<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">or nationality<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">King County\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hosted two MHFA Instructor classes and onboarded 21 new\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Instructors<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, allowing\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">us to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0increase\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">our\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">capacity to provide MHFA training in rural,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">unincorporated<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">geographically isolated<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0areas of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">K<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">C<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ounty.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">additional<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Instructors\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">allow us to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">better serve the community\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nstructors\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">who\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">look and speak like the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">communities\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">they\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">train<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Given the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0success of the King County M<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">HFA program<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and despite financial challenges\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">stemming from\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the COVID-19 pandemic, King County\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">will\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">increase<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">program\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0budget by nearly $200,000<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">this year<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0increase<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">funding\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">will result in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0an additional 2<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">500 community members\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">being\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">trained in MHFA<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This funding will also allow the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">program<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to train all King County COVID-19 Contact Tracers, so they can provide mental health education,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">information<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and referrals to the people they reach.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We are excited for the future\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of the King County\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mental Health First Aid<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">program<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and hope other communities will follow our bold initiative<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.
