\"\"Brandon was an outgoing, fun-loving and enjoyable co-worker whose life ended abruptly<\/span>\u00a0after a night of heavy drinking<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>His death had a<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>profound\u00a0<\/span>impact on our\u00a0<\/span>staff\u00a0<\/span>as we learned he had been<\/span>\u00a0living with a mental health challenge\u00a0<\/span>and substance use that had gone unrecognized<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We serve within a total confinement facility that provides behavioral health services to individuals living with severe mental illness, substance use disorders and extensive justice<\/span>–<\/span>involved backgrounds.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Many\u00a0<\/span>on staff\u00a0<\/span>struggled to make sense of how it was that a facility committed to providing therapeutic treatment\u00a0<\/span>for\u00a0<\/span>mental health and substance use challenges\u00a0<\/span>failed to recognize and respond\u00a0<\/span>when the same were<\/span>\u00a0experienced by\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0staff member<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We brought\u00a0<\/span>Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)<\/span>\u00a0to our facility with the primary goal of helping staff better care for one another and our clients. It\u00a0<\/span>has\u00a0<\/span>raised the mental health literacy of our non-clinical staff<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>reducing stigma and giving them permission<\/span>\u00a0to seek help and\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>engage a more<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>empath<\/span>et<\/span>ic and empowered approach\u00a0<\/span>with<\/span>\u00a0our clients.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Overall, it helped the facility to shift toward a culture of holistic wellness\u00a0<\/span>for<\/span>\u00a0staff and clients.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>In fact,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>MHFA<\/span>\u00a0is<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>now part of our employee onboarding process.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2017<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0my employer\u00a0<\/span>asked me\u00a0<\/span>to<\/span>\u00a0becom<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0a MHFA\u00a0<\/span>I<\/span>nstructor through a grant program that was\u00a0<\/span>funding<\/span>\u00a0selected individuals<\/span>\u00a0for Instructor training<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0En\u00a0<\/span>agreement was that you would provide a given number of trainings in the community in exchange for the scholarship.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>I<\/span>\u2019<\/span>m so thankful for that opportunity!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>I brought MHFA back to my agency while fulfilling my commitment to provide trainings in our community. I saw the difference that MHFA was making and wanted to be a part of it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>I began instructing beyond my initial agreement with the grantor.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My<\/span>\u00a0work is fueled by my professional background\u00a0<\/span>serving individuals living with mental health challenges, substance use\u00a0<\/span>challenges\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>justice-<\/span>involved backgrounds<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Being a\u00a0<\/span>parent to young adult<\/span>s\u00a0<\/span>living with mental health challenges<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>sparks<\/span>\u00a0further inspiration<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>I\u2019m passionate about reducing stigma, raising mental health literacy and creating communities of recovery and hope<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>I accomplish\u00a0<\/span>these objectives\u00a0<\/span>by advancing Mental Health First Aid<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0The more I instruct, the more passionate I bec<\/span>o<\/span>me about MHFA. It has given me the opportunity to redeem my lived experience, reduce stigma, raise mental health literacy and create communities of recovery and hope!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Trained Mental Health First Aiders are helping people and making c<\/span>ommunities safer<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0For example,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0security officer recently shared that\u00a0<\/span>they\u00a0<\/span>applied<\/span>\u00a0the skills acquired through\u00a0<\/span>MHFA\u00a0<\/span>to assist an irate citizen on our\u00a0<\/span>s<\/span>tate\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>c<\/span>apitol\u00a0<\/span>c<\/span>ampus.<\/span>\u00a0Another time, a<\/span>\u00a0training host reached out to me regarding\u00a0<\/span>several\u00a0<\/span>almost<\/span>–<\/span>immediate results of\u00a0<\/span>the MHFA\u00a0<\/span>course<\/span>\u00a0they had offered:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. An attendee was able to recognize the signs and symptoms of a substance use challenge in one of their relationships.\u00a0<\/span>The newly trained First Aider<\/span>\u00a0helped that person and encouraged them to seek professional help.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. One First Aider\u00a0<\/span>encountered two teens talking about suicide. They used the\u00a0<\/span>MHFA Action Plan (ALGEE)<\/span>\u00a0to assess\u00a0<\/span>the teens\u2019<\/span>\u00a0suicidal thoughts and risks while navigating them toward the help that was needed<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. The evening after a MHFA course, another First Aider learned\u00a0<\/span>that a family member had attempted suicide<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>The first aider took out their MHFA course manual and\u00a0entered into\u00a0a conversation using the\u00a0<\/span>Plan de Acci\u00f3n del MHFA<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Without this new knowledge and proven\u00a0<\/span>A<\/span>ction\u00a0<\/span>P<\/span>lan they would not have known how to respond to this crisis.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    For every story\u00a0<\/span>I hear<\/span>, there are many more<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Across our national landscape w<\/span>e take great encouragement\u00a0<\/span>from\u00a0<\/span>knowing that\u00a0<\/span>our collective efforts through Mental Health First Aid\u00a0<\/span>are making a difference<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Together we are\u00a0<\/span>reducing stigma, raising mental health literacy and creating communities of recovery and hope!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
