It\u2019s important to remember that these feelings are normal, especially during a crisis, and can vary in severity from mild uneasiness to intense emotions depending on the person.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/daily-life-coping\/managing-stress-anxiety.html\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> (CDC), the COVID-19 pandemic can cause strong feelings of stress for adults and children, including:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Fear and worry about your own health and the health of your loved ones<\/li>\n<li>Changes in sleep or eating patterns<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty sleeping or concentrating<\/li>\n<li>Worsening of chronic physical health problems<\/li>\n<li>Worsening of mental health conditions<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you\u2019re experiencing any of these, there are ways to manage your symptoms and cope while maintaining physical distancing.<\/p>\n<p>The CDC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/daily-life-coping\/managing-stress-anxiety.html\">recommends<\/a> a few ways to cope with feelings of stress, including:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Take breaks from the news, including on social media.<\/li>\n<li>Take care of your body with healthy meals, exercise and deep breathing techniques.<\/li>\n<li>Take time to relax and do at-home activities you enjoy.<\/li>\n<li>Connect with your loved ones.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The World Health Organization (WHO) also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/docs\/default-source\/coronaviruse\/coping-with-stress.pdf?sfvrsn=9845bc3a_2\">recommends<\/a> key self-care strategies to take care of your mental health and well-being while at home:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Maintain a healthy lifestyle, including appropriate sleep, exercise and diet.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t use alcohol or other drugs to cope with feelings of sadness or anxiety.<\/li>\n<li>Follow a credible source for information about COVID-19, such as WHO or CDC.<\/li>\n<li>Limit how much time you spend watching or listening to news that makes you upset.<\/li>\n<li>Use coping mechanisms that have helped you in the past during difficult situations.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You can also use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org\/2020\/03\/how-to-care-for-yourself-while-practicing-physical-distancing\/\">self-care tips<\/a> from the MHFA curriculum, including relaxation therapy and light therapy to improve symptoms of anxiety and depression.<\/p>\n<p>Knowing which tools are available is a good first step when it comes to dealing with feelings of stress and anxiety. Everyone experiences \u2014 and manages \u2014 stress in different ways.
