While social media wasn\u2019t cited as a direct cause of eating disorders, according to the study, there is a connection that should be acknowledged and monitored.<\/p>\n<p>Vegan food blogger Jordan Younger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/how-instagram-encouraged-my-eating-disorder_b_5818e9a6e4b01fffa751fa2b?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAACqYH3l3IWg_F02m-AZ7S54YGR3NnsC2kwpFx7EPO3--WPVI2yeY3pW7oAZ3uuFwL-58OuHmX-9hH4HRccwcrJ3eRaOQSJuIE4uZa1AtiVtEBY5Ov6sBKAtMHK5hwC1WcKNxSBuoChqfINCQ0kRXhZ1LqCZv75nOlBu3zc1czgMP\">shared her experience<\/a> of using her Instagram to promote a healthy lifestyle as a fa\u00e7ade as \u201chealthy eating\u201d quickly escalated into an eating disorder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe obsession with my diet took up my every waking hour. It was stopping me from leading a normal life full of social activities and other interests,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Jordan isn\u2019t alone. Eating disorders affect up to 30 million people in the United States, and the median age of onset for these disorders is 18 to 20 years old.<\/p>\n<p>Young people are influenced daily by the pressure of social media to look and act a certain way, and if not careful, these thoughts can have a serious impact on their mental and physical health.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, social media platforms are starting to take responsibility for the power they have and are making positive changes to help young people. In September 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Business\/instagram-announces-policies-promoting-diet-products-cosmetic-procedures\/story?id=65716682\">Instagram announced<\/a> new policies to protect people under the age of 18 from certain weight loss products and cosmetic procedures on its platform. People can report problematic content, and, in some cases, it may be removed entirely.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90461846\/snapchat-introduces-new-interventions-for-mental-health\">Snapchat announced<\/a> the launch of a new tool called \u201cHere For You.\u201d The service connects people searching for topics like depression, anxiety and thinspo (an abbreviation for thinspiration) to informative and helpful content written by mental health experts.<\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t know if social media has a direct link to eating disorders. But, if there is a connection, you can help monitor it too. As the use of social media increases, it is important that you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org\/external\/2018\/01\/scrolling-social-keep-mental-health-mind\/\">take steps<\/a> to lessen its negative effects and even make it a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org\/2019\/06\/three-ways-to-use-social-media-positively\/\">positive influence<\/a> on your life. With the right focus, it can be a place to connect with loved ones and share inspiring stories.<\/p>\n<p>You can also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org\/take-a-course\/\">take a Mental Health First Aid course<\/a>.
