\u201cTo this day, 18 years later, I can drive down Woodruff and\nSpring Streets and see the image of a 1-year-old who was shot by his father.\nEvery single day, that image from 18 years ago is still in my head. And I\u2019ve\nlearned that\u2019s normal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jason Cash is our 2 millionth Mental Health First Aider. He\nwas recently trained in Mental Health First Aid for Fire and EMS and uses what\nhe learned in his training to take care of his own mental health and help those\naround him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He, like many of us, faces heartbreak and stress every day\nand is learning to cope with it in a healthy way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI use ALGEE in every conversation that I have, whether it\u2019s\nwith people experiencing homelessness, other first responders or friends and\nfamily. It\u2019s part of my life now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jason joined the Long Beach Fire Department more than 14\nyears ago and although now he has coping mechanisms and a support system in\nplace to help manage the challenges that comes with a high-stress job, this\nwasn\u2019t always the case. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, when he first graduated from the fire academy, it\nwas the exact opposite. Every day, he worked long hours, got little sleep and\nfaced death and destruction head-on. He wasn\u2019t given any information on how to\nhandle the difficult things he\u2019d see or how to protect himself emotionally and\nmentally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jason\u2019s career continued to grow, and with more\nopportunities to help his community came more stress, both professionally and\npersonally. He faced a divorce and lost his second wife to cancer. He\nexperienced on-the-job injuries. He struggled with addiction, depression and\nPTSD as a result. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI never knew I was addicted to prescription medicine and I\nnever knew I was addicted to alcohol. All I knew was that it stopped what was\ngoing on in my head. I had physical pain and emotional pain, but I was never\naware that what I was doing was trying to take away the emotional pain from\nyears before,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few years later, Jason was on duty and witnessed a woman\nattempt suicide. He realized he was filling his cup with images of death and\ndestruction and this situation filled it to the very top. The fire department\nheld a debrief afterward, and for the first time in his career, Jason admitted\nthat he wasn\u2019t okay. He admitted that he was affected by the call and that he\nneeded help. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jason, like many of us, needs help sometimes. And that\u2019s\nokay. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We know that first responders are more likely than members\nof the general public to develop\nbehavioral health problems<\/a>, including depression and PTSD, and firefighters\nare more likely to die by suicide than in the line of duty. We know that first\nresponders face tragedy daily, and often don\u2019t have the tools and resources to\nhelp themselves and those around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s where Mental Health First Aid can help. Our unique\nmodule for firefighters and first responders, Mental\nHealth First Aid for Fire and EMS<\/a>, teaches strategies\nto better assess and access support for this critical population and how they\ncan also help community members. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jason uses the Mental Health First Aid ALGEE Action Plan\nevery day to help those around him. As a member of the Long Beach Fire\nDepartment Homelessness Education and Response Unit (HEART), he helps connect\npeople experiencing homelessness to appropriate resources and services that\nthey need. During each conversation, he uses the ALGEE Action Plan to listen\nnonjudgmentally, give reassurance and information and encourage professional\nand self-help. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are now 2 million people across the country trained in\nMental Health First Aid. That\u2019s 2 million people who have the skills to\nidentify and respond to mental health and substance use challenges and crises\nin their communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
