Overall, <strong>more than one in five people<\/strong> experience a panic attack in their lifetimes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Do you know what to do if you see someone experiencing one?<\/p>\n<p>If not, don\u2019t worry. <strong>This guide will explain how to help someone who is having a panic attack<\/strong> so you\u2019ll feel prepared if you ever encounter a person who needs help.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How to Tell if It\u2019s a Panic Attack<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Before you can help a person who is having a panic attack, you need to know if it\u2019s because of fear or anxiety they\u2019re experiencing or if there\u2019s a physical explanation.<\/p>\n<p>Here are 10 symptoms of panic attacks to look for:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18313 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.grafik.mentalhealthfirstaid.org\/app\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Signs-of-a-Panic-Attack.png\" alt=\"Signs of a Panic Attack\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>IMPORTANT NOTE:<\/strong> Do these symptoms look familiar? They\u2019re also signs of cardiac distress. It\u2019s difficult to know if a person is experiencing a panic attack or a heart attack.<\/p>\n<p>The best thing to do is ask if the person has had a panic attack before. If they haven\u2019t and they don\u2019t think they\u2019re having one now, call 9-1-1 and follow physical first aid protocol. If the person loses consciousness, call an ambulance, check for breathing and pulse and apply physical first aid principles. You can also check for a medical alert bracelet or necklace for more information.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How to Help Someone Who Is Having a Panic Attack<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If you suspect someone is having a panic attack, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org\/\">Mental Health First Aid<\/a> teaches you to follow the ALGEE action steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #034ea2;\">A<\/span>SSESS for risk of harm: <\/strong>Ask them if it\u2019s happened before and if they think they\u2019re having one now. If it\u2019s something they\u2019re familiar with and they suspect it is, ask them if they\u2019d like help. If they do, introduce yourself (if it\u2019s a stranger).<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #034ea2;\">L<\/span>ISTEN non-judgmentally: <\/strong>Ask directly what they think might help (for example, moving away from a crowded area or sitting down). Don\u2019t assume you know what\u2019s best for them.<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #034ea2;\">G<\/span>IVE reassurance and information: <\/strong>Remain calm and reassure the person that they\u2019re most likely experiencing a panic attack and that it\u2019s not dangerous. Explain that while what they\u2019re feeling is frightening, the symptoms will pass. As you talk, use short sentences and speak in a clear, firm manner. Be patient and stay with them throughout the attack.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 60px;\"><strong>IMPORTANT NOTE:<\/strong> You might have seen on TV that people having panic attacks should breathe into a paper bag. This is no longer considered a best practice because the person ends up breathing in carbon dioxide, which could cause them to pass out. If someone is breathing rapidly, don\u2019t call attention to their breathing. Simply stay calm and model a steadier breathing rate.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #034ea2;\">E<\/span>NCOURAGE appropriate professional help: <\/strong>When the panic attack is over, provide the person information related to panic attacks if they don\u2019t know about them or don\u2019t know where to acquire relevant resources. If they seem concerned, explain that there are effective treatments for panic attacks and that there\u2019s help available to them.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Here are some useful resources you can share:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/adaa.org\/about-adaa\/press-room\/facts-statistics\">Asociaci\u00f3n Americana contra la Ansiedad y la Depresi\u00f3n<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.freedomfromfear.org\/\">Freedom From Fear<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mentalhealthamerica.net\/\">Mental Health America<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nami.org\/\">Alianza Nacional de Enfermedades Mentales<\/a><\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #034ea2;\">E<\/span>NCOURAGE self-help and other support strategies: <\/strong>Encourage the person to tap into other support sources, like family, friends or any communities they\u2019re part of.
