{"id":12037,"date":"2018-06-04T15:36:26","date_gmt":"2018-06-04T20:36:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mentalhe180dev.wpenginepowered.com\/news\/awkward-conversation-how-to-respond-when-someone-tells-you-theyre-not-okay\/"},"modified":"2025-10-13T08:24:18","modified_gmt":"2025-10-13T13:24:18","slug":"awkward-conversation-how-to-respond-when-someone-tells-you-theyre-not-okay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.grafik.mentalhealthfirstaid.org\/es\/news\/awkward-conversation-how-to-respond-when-someone-tells-you-theyre-not-okay\/","title":{"rendered":"The Awkward Conversation: How to Respond When Someone Tells You They\u2019re Not Okay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cHow are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those three words have become a prescriptive question with a prescriptive answer in today\u2019s society.<\/p>\n<p>When we\u2019re asked how we are, we\u2019re expected to automatically respond with, \u201cGreat,\u201d \u201cGood,\u201d or at the very worst, \u201cI\u2019m fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But in a world where 1 in 5 people will experience a mental health or addiction challenge in their lifetime, and 100 percent of people will have a bad day every now and then, why is it that so few of us are prepared to respond when someone tells us they\u2019re not actually doing okay?<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s exactly the question<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fV1CQaTTvzE&amp;t=\"> this recent video<\/a> from Mental Health First Aid USA seeks to answer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fV1CQaTTvzE&amp;t=\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17442 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.grafik.mentalhealthfirstaid.org\/app\/uploads\/2025\/09\/awk-convo-2-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"461\" height=\"258\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dani, a woman who has lived with anxiety and depression for more than 12 years, opens up to some complete strangers about her experience with depression. When they ask her how she is\u2014she answers honestly. She\u2019s not doing well. In fact, she has been struggling with severe depression.<\/p>\n<p>What follows is mostly a series of awkward pauses. People seem to want to help\u2014they just don\u2019t know how.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just expect the automatic response of, \u2018How are you doing?,\u2019 \u2018I\u2019m good,\u2019\u201d said one of the participants when asked why he was caught off guard at Dani\u2019s honesty. \u201cAnd I don\u2019t think people do it because they\u2019re inconsiderate, I think it\u2019s because they honestly don\u2019t know what to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s where Mental Health First Aid is valuable. It teaches people a concrete action plan for starting or continuing a conversation about mental health or addiction, and for helping people find appropriate support, whether that\u2019s treatment or just a non-judgmental listening ear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you had cancer, you wouldn\u2019t will yourself to get better with that. And so, I think that\u2014I hope that people just start talking about [mental health] more,\u201d said another participant.<\/p>\n<p>Talking about mental health and substance use more is a great place to start tearing down the barriers that prevent so many from seeking and receiving help.
