No matter what the job is, getting workers home safely is always more important than getting the product out the door. Physical demands, temperature changes and high-stress environments are the norm. And because of the constant demands of the manufacturing industry, inconsistent schedules and overnight shifts can be routine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The manufacturing industry ranks as one of the unhealthiest for workplace mental health, and the turnover rate within manufacturing is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/pdf\/jolts.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">33% higher than the national average<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jon Rasmussen of DTNA said there are two major blocks to mental health care in manufacturing: lack of awareness about mental health care and resources, and the stigma around discussing it at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe pain and discomfort [of physical demands] can drive people to self-medicate, and you may not be able to see a doctor in the hours you need to because you\u2019re on the off shift,\u201d Rasmussen said. \u201cBut there are things we can do as employers, leaders and coworkers [to] continue to combat the stigma around mental health and substance use.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hollie Frye of the Nucor Corporation agrees. \u201cThere\u2019s an old saying, \u2018leave it at the gate,\u2019 and that just can\u2019t happen anymore,\u201d Frye said. \u201cOur teammates need more from us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.grafik.mentalhealthfirstaid.org\/app\/uploads\/2025\/09\/woman-in-forklift-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"a woman on a forklift in a warehouse\" class=\"wp-image-26291\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Mental Health Training for Manufacturers Is Needed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mental health education like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org\/population-focused-modules\/workplace\/\">MHFA at Work<\/a> helps workers to bring their whole selves past the gate \u2014 and once they\u2019re inside, to spread awareness about vital resources like Employee Assistance Programs and mentorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frye emphasized that the primary goal of any manufacturing workplace is always to ensure employees get home safely each day. Nucor and DTNA are maintaining that mission for mental health safety, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a very active environment,\u201d Frye said. \u201cIf you\u2019re not on your best game, you\u2019re putting yourself and your peers at risk. We want to make sure that our leaders are equipped to recognize stress and anxiety, and that they\u2019re doing regular check-ins.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless of the shift an employee works, Rasmussen and Frye say the jobs can often be isolating. Because a manager or shift lead may be the only person an employee talks to during the shift, it is imperative that leadership knows how to have open conversations about mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIt is my personal opinion that MHFA should be required and encouraged for everyone, but especially for leaders with direct reports.\u201d <br>\u2013 Jon Rasmussen<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mental Health First Aid at Work for Manufacturing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After two deaths by suicide at the Detroit branch of DTNA, leadership in Detroit took <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org\/at-work-manufacturing\/\">MHFA at Work<\/a>. From there, it spread through the company. The first Nucor branch to begin taking MHFA was in Crawfordsville, Indiana, and the company has now trained over 1,400 employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is my personal opinion that [MHFA] should be required and encouraged for everyone, but especially for leaders with direct reports,\u201d Rasmussen said. \u201cYou need to be able to identify, communicate and be comfortable talking to people, especially in a crisis. You can\u2019t be intimidated by that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both Frye and Rasmussen emphasized the importance of leadership buy-in for mental health initiatives like MHFA. Frye cited Leo Topalian, Nucor\u2019s CEO, on the importance of \u201cwhole-person safety\u201d \u2014 caring for mental health and safety just as much as physical health and safety. Similarly, Rasmussen repeated the words of DTNA CEO John O\u2019Leary: \u201cGreat leaders express vulnerabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rasmussen added, \u201cWhen leadership sets the standard and they share these things, it really moves the needle, and people feel safe to express their own self.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Workforce leaders might invest in mental health education like MHFA because of its return on investment: the increased productivity and quality that results from whole-person safety. But Rasmussen sees it as much more than just another cog in the machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome things are less about returns and more about just doing what\u2019s right,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s simply the right thing to do to take care of yourself and to care about others, especially when you have a responsibility as a manager \u2014 and just as a human being \u2014 to make the world a better place.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nucor Corporation and Daimler Truck North America are finding their return on investment by doing the right thing: creating whole-person safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MHFA is more than just a training.
